Director: Nigel Cole

Cast: Christopher Walken, Sharon Stone, Alessandro Nivola, Amanda Peet, Peter Coyote, Dean Cain

Videoretailer.com Review:

Christopher Walken stars as ‘Nat’, an aging eccentric con-artist and deadbeat dad dying to reconnect with his troubled son ‘Flynn’ (Alessandro Nivola), a conservative businessman who has just lost his job and his long-time girl (Amanda Peet). When the estranged father knocks on his son’s door, he tells him he’s been diagnosed with a terminal illness and shanghais his reluctant son into driving him cross-country for experimental medical treatment. Low on cash, they pull off increasingly ridiculous and embarrassing schemes along the way to reach their destination spending only $5 a day.

Very good performances from both Walken and Nivola help this indie road trip dramedy stand up beyond the clichés and predictability of this film about father / son opposites who have time together to initially clash, but then get to know each other, and begin to enjoy each other’s company to the point where there’s even some schmaltzy tear-jerk lite material in the third act. The comedy here mostly works, making this an enjoyable relatively unknown indie with very good starpower (Sharon Stone has a cameo + role, Dean Cain and Peter Coyote also appear). This should find some alright mainstream appeal thanks to the cast…stores with heavier traffic could benefit by buying a shelf or two of this title, making it stand out more than a few copies would…this is the sort of thing that will rent if it’s noticed. IMDB User Rating = 6.7 (out of 10).

Theatrical / Broadcast Release Date: 9/25/09

Director: Scott Hicks

Cast: Clive Owen, Laura Fraser, George MacKay, Emma Booth

Videoretailer.com Review:

‘Joe Warr’ (Clive Owen) is a witty, wisecracking South Australian sports writer who, in the wake of his wife’s death, finds himself a single parent bringing up a 6-year old and a teen – both sons from different mothers who are reeling from the recent death. With turbulent emotions swirling just below the surface, Joe throws himself into the only child-rearing philosophy he thinks has a shot at bringing joy back into their lives: “just says yes.” With a household without rules, life becomes exuberant, instinctual, reckless...and on the constant verge of disaster. As they work through their various issues, the boys of the Warr household find they must each find their own way, however tenuous, to grow up and move on together as a family.

Pretty good human drama has a terrific performance from Owen that many claimed was Oscar worthy, but the film itself is probably a little too conventional, clichéd and at points, slow, to be considered Oscar worthy. Most mainstream renters that give this a shot should quite enjoy…is Owen’s starpower good enough however to attract the mainstream though? Compare with 7/09’s “Local Color”, but bump this up for Owen’s starpower. IMDB User Rating = 7.5 (out of 10).

Video Release Date: 1/26/2010

Box Office Sales / Broadcast Details: 4.2

Number Of Screens: 380

Theatrical / Broadcast Release Date: 9/18/09

Director: Jane Campion

Cast: Ben Whishaw, Abbie Cornish, Kerry Fox

Videoretailer.com Review:

Taking place in England in the early 19th century, this bio-romance centers on the secret love affair begins between 23 year old English poet, John Keats (Ben Whishaw), the outspoken student of fashion / girl next door Fanny Brawne (Abbie Cornish) as the pair initially clashed personalities, but an illness of Keats' younger brother drew them together when Keats was touched by Fanny's efforts to help, and agreed to teach her poetry. Intensely and helplessly absorbed in each other, the young lovers were swept into a wave of romantic obsession that deepened as their troubles mounted, and only Keats' illness (tuberculosis) proved insurmountable.

Pretty excellent period drama does indeed have the slowish pacing prevalent with the genre, but does such a masterful job at being sensuous and emotionally involving, that most did, and will enjoy this tale of Keats’ last three years in life with Fanny Brawne. Critics mostly loved this, as did the consumer. Question is, without much starpower or title awareness, and a plot dealing with a 19th century poet, will this find any mainstream interest? The target here is likely arthouse & period drama fans. Compare with 1/09’s “Brideshead Revisited”. IMDB User Rating = 7.7 (out of 10).

Director: T.J. Martin

Cast: Crispin Glover, Clayne Crawford, Christian Cane

Videoretailer.com Review:

During the westward expansion of the 1840’s, a group of California bound emigrants, known as the ‘Donner Party’ became trapped in the high Sierra Nevada mountains by heavy snowfall, and when food supplies ran low, tempers flare between ‘William Eddy’ and his employer (Crispin Glover) over how the remaining meat should be divided. When ‘Charles Stanton’ (Christian Kane) returns with news of food supplies stockpiled along the trail leading to a distant fort, a small group of the Party breaks off to reach CA on snowshoes for help. But when they become lost, it’s rumored they turned to cannibalism to survive.

Between the subject matter and Crispin Glover’s involvement, an immediate reaction is ‘dark horror tale’, but Glover plays it straight, and the film plays it like a drama – effectively. This is no feel-good film, but is a decent portrayal of what may have happened (to this day, nobody knows for sure). While the premise may find interest with fans of bleak drama, or with the curious who are familiar with this dark nugget in American history, the amateurish boxart isn’t going to do any favors as it makes this look like a mediocre made-for-CMT TV Western. Most should be alright with 1-3.

Cast: Steven Mackintosh, Brian Cox, Liam Cunningham, and Joseph Fiennes

Videoretailer.com Review:

‘Frank’ (Brian Cox) is a criminal who was forced to leave his wife and six-year-old daughter behind when he was sentenced to life in prison without parole, and while he’s made his peace with a life behind bars, when he learns his daughter has fallen seriously ill, he feels a powerful need to reconnect with his family and plots an escape. Knowing he can't do it alone, Frank assembles a team from various factions of the prison population, including ‘Viv’, who makes and deals drugs from his cell; ‘Lenny’ (Joseph Fiennes); ‘Lacey’, Frank's new white-collar cellmate, and some dangerous and unpredictable members of the prison's community, including vicious and corrupt brothers ‘Rizza’ and ‘Tony’. As the ragtag bunch of crooks and murderers try and tunnel out, various dramas and tensions ensue.

Suspenseful and mostly entertaining prison escape flick has some okay starpower for an indie, and definitely has an attractive premise. Critics and consumers were mostly very happy with this flick, and there is some apparent anticipation for this release. Most should be alright with 1-5. IMDB User Rating = 6.9 (out of 10).

Director: Thanakorn Pongsuan

Cast: Preeti Barameenat, Khanutra Chuchuaysuwan - Thailand

Videoretailer.com Review:

‘Tai’, a young man arrested on a crime charge, is discharged thanks to his twin brother ‘Tan's dogged help, but after being set free, he finds Tan in a coma with severe injuries that Tai learns from Tan's girlfriend, Pang, were due Tan’s involvement in some risky business to raise money to fight Tai's case. Feeling guilty, Tai traces Tan’s dealings to an illegal basketball gambling ring. To find out more about what lead to Tan being beaten into a coma, he joins the "Fireball" team - a team belonging to ‘Hia Den’, and Tai soon finds that in order to uncover the truth, he’ll have to put his own life on the line as in this league, there’s more on-court fighting than dribbling and dunking.

Sort of a “Bloodsport” with basketball, this action flick from Thailand will have niche appeal with fans of Martial Arts films, and to those who are drawn in by the pretty attractive boxart. Other than this, though , it may be a tough sell. Most should be alright with 1-3 or 4. IMDB User Rating = 4.2 (out of 10).

Director: Russell Mulcahy

Cast: Ving Rhames, Thomas Jane, Doug Hutchinson

Videoretailer.com Review:

Thomas Jane stars as tough-as-nails triggerman ‘Malone’, a shady, mean character with a near legendary reputation for being an unforgiving criminal you don’t want to cross. When he takes a job retrieving a briefcase – contents mysteriously unknown – from a bunch of thugs and hitmen holed up in a hotel, he soon finds that powerful mob boss ‘Whitmore’ wants it, and dispatches a couple of his henchmen (Ving Rhames, Chris Yen) to get it. Now, as things heat up, Malone’s legend is put to the test…lotsa bullets and blood will fly before all is said and done.

Stylish, violent crime-actioner is somewhere a mix between “Sin City” and “Dick Tracy”, and comes with significant anticipation. This played at Cannes and premiered at Comicon to a very good consumer response…it’s very surprising, given the viewer response, starpower and currently popular genre that this didn’t see any theatrical time. The boxart is a bit generic, but kind of plays into the kitsch of the whole thing…hope it’s enough to attract mainstreamers. This would probably be a good title to bring in more copies than you normally would on a title with such little exposure and awareness, again as we often say, there are some titles that if displayed prominently and in breadth, will give the impression to the casual mainstream customer that it’s actually a big theatrical title they must have missed hearing about…they will be more apt to rent than if there were just two or five copies. Theoretically, this approach would work with most titles with any starpower, but you don’t want to over-use the tactic, nor do you want to use the tactic on crappy movies, thereby burning the customer who goes out on a limb to rent a title they’ve never heard of. You want to reward your customers for being adventurous…adventurous customers make you more money. IMDB User Rating = 9.7 (out of 10).
(that’s not a typo, but is based on only 88 votes…this will more than likely drop once a broader base has the opportunity to watch and vote.

Videoretailer.com Review:

Based on the memoirs written by narcissistic party-boy / ladies man ‘Tucker Max’, this buddy comedy focuses on Tucker Max (played here by Matt Czuchry), who along with jaded and misogynistic ‘Drew’, take their soon-to-be-married pal ‘Dan’ out for a night of bachelor partying, but before the night is through, Tucker abandons Dan to pursue a sexy girl, leaving Dan in the doghouse with his girl. Disinvited from the wedding, and out of Dan’s life, Tucker tries to find a way to balance the love for himself and the demands of having a BFF.

There are a few laughs in this frat-boy comedy, but for the most part, this “Hangover” wannabe falls painfully short on being entertaining and will only be enjoyed by fans of the real Tucker Max’s blogs, or by folks like them. Most should be alright with 1-3…for the most part, fans of the blog will find a way to catch this crap online, bro. IMDB User Rating = 4.4 (out of 10).

Director: Paul Morrison

Cast: Robert Pattinson, Javier Beltran

Videoretailer.com Review:

In 1922 Madrid, bohemian lifestyles are flourishing -- from the arrival of jazz music to the en vogue teachings of Sigmund Freud. As the tale opens, ‘Salvador Dali’ (Robert Pattinson) is only 18, but his dreams of artistic glory are blooming, and his overt personality and social attitudes soon draw the full-fledged attention of two from the in-crowd – ‘Lorca’ and ‘Buñuel’ (Matthew McNulty). For awhile, the three become the most "in" clique in all of Spain and find themselves virtually defining the currents of modernism; however, when Buñuel leaves for Paris, Salvador and Federico are thrust together even closer than before -- so close that one night, their relations suddenly cross the line from platonic friendship to something far more intimate.

Speculative period bio-drama was mostly hated by the critics, but found more sympathy from the consumer who was much more appreciative, being more willing to forgive or overlook the paper-thin plot, the melodrama and the bad acting from Pattinson. The only thing this really has going for it is Pattinson (“Twilight” star), but will teen girls want to see a slow-moving period drama where he’s wearing an awful fake moustache and getting it on with another fella? Though a different genre, it may behoove to compare with “Haunted Airman”, as it was also a largely no-name title Pattinson starred in, and that was released after his “Twilight” fan. IMDB User Rating = 6.9 (out of 10).

Videoretailer.com Review:

In the year 2048 most of the world has been submerged under water after a series of natural disasters melted the polar ice caps, and the flooding of all the continents within three years. Billions died, all major coastal cities were lost, and the rest of mankind fled to what was left of the earth’s landmass. With not enough food or space, the new mega cities are overcrowded and hopeless. A group emerges, equipped with high tech submarines, trying to salvage old relics and treasures, and connect the uncertain future with the past…they are known as the Lost City Raiders, and they’re looking for a legendary Egyptian artifact said to have the power to control Earth's seas: the Scepter of Sobek.

Gawd-awful Sci-Fi Channel flick has a few things going for it that may make this an attractive offering to some…the boxart, and a little starpower. Once they plug this in the DVD player however, all the fun will go out the window…the direction, story, dialogue, acting, FX and well, everything about this is sub-par. But, these Sci-Fi Channel bombs always seem to find takers, so there’s not reason this shouldn’t either. Can’t see why anyone will need more than 1-4. Theatrical / Broadcast Release Date: 10/28/09

Director: Kenny Ortega

Cast: Interviews, backstage & rehearsal footage as MJ prepared for his shows in London

Videoretailer.com Review:

Compiled from over 100 hours of rehearsal footage for the 50 shows he had been scheduled to perform at London's O2 arena just a week after his death, this documentary takes you behind the scenes to see Jackson rehearsing a number of his songs for the show, as well as a private look at Jackson as he has never been seen before, in raw and candid detail.

Very well done musical documentary certainly has an underlying sad tone to it knowing that all of the preparation and artistic energy expended on the screen will ultimately be for naught, but for all of his misfortunes, foibles, freakishness and dubious actions, nobody can argue that the guy lived his music and had a rare artistic talent. In the same way that the VH1 Behind the Music series can keep you riveted, even when the episode is about a band you could care less about, this movie can reel the casual / indifferent fan in the same way…this appreciation can only multiply with fans of Jackson who supported this to a box-office success, making 5X Madonna’s “Truth or Dare” rockumentary, for whatever that tid-bit’s worth. Most markets will find very good initial appeal…Jackson had a pretty broad spectrum of fans…you can’t really hone in on a demographic, though you can eliminate most seniors, red necks and children under 13…again, for whatever that’s worth. There’s no real comparable title to this…go with your gut and remember that most will more likely underestimate this than overestimate it. IMDB User Rating = 7.4 (out of 10).

Videoretailer.com Review:

Special Agent Strahm is dead, and Detective ‘Hoffman’ (Costas Mandylor) has emerged as the unchallenged successor to Jigsaw's legacy. However, when the FBI draws closer to Hoffman, he is forced to set a game into motion, and Jigsaw's grand scheme is finally understood.

Sixth installment has largely more of the same carnage, backstory and flashbacks that fans have come to expect. As with the other sequels, some claimed it was the best of the sequels, while others found it weaker – and the critics all hated it. The only real big difference is with the B/O – this made about half of what the others typically will bring in. There is no reason to expect this to perform any differently than “Saw V”, which was released on DVD in 1/09, or “Saw IV”, released in 1/08…this is becoming a January tradition. IMDB User Rating = 6.4 (out of 10).

Documentary about the 1974 ‘Zaire 74’ music festival which accompanied the Rumble in the Jungle heavyweight boxing championship match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in October 1974. Performers include James Brown, Celia Cruz and the Fania All-Stars, B.B. King, Miriam Makeba, The Spinners, Bill Withers, and Manu Dibango.

Energetic knee-bouncer footage of an historic music festival that back-dropped an historic sporting event. Appeal will be niche to fans of soul music, but for those fans, this is a must-have. Most should be good with 1-2. IMDB User Rating = 6.9 (out of 10).

Videoretailer.com Review:

St Trinian’s, the infamous school for ‘young ladies’ is facing dire financial crisis when the bank threatens headmistress ‘Camilla Fritton’ (Rupert Everett) with closure, and to make matters worse, her unorthodox doctrine of free expression and self empowerment is also under threat from new Education Minister ‘Geoffrey Thwaits’ (Colin Firth), an old flame of Camilla’s who is determined to bring discipline and order back to the anarchic school. In true St Trinian style, the girls are smart, fearless and determined to defend the school they love to the end, so they unite the warring girl gang cliques and come up with a scheme involving the heist of a priceless painting.

New addition to the 1950’s British movie series that began with “Belles of St. Trinians”, and was followed up with “Blue Murder at St. Trinians”, “The Pure Hell of St. Trinians”, “The Great St. Trinians Train Robbery” and “The Wildcats of St. Trinians”, is a pretty tame, sometimes lame, but overall mildly amusing British romp that targeted British teen and ‘tween girls, who could overlook some shoddy production and an atmosphere as untamed as the girls in the titular school. There’s a little starpower that could find some mainstream looks, and the boxart is impishly appealing, but it’s tough to say how well a British comedy will translate to our American customers…despite Mischa Barton’s casting here. Maybe compare with 7/09’s “Bart Got A Room”.

Videoretailer.com Review:

Set in a future where humans live in isolation, and only communicate with other humans by using robots that are better looking versions of themselves that serve as their social surrogates in day-to-day transactions, Bruce Willis stars as FBI agent ‘Tom Greer’ who enlists the aid of his own surrogate to investigate the murder of a genius college student who invented the surrogate program. When he discovers a vast conspiracy behind the surrogate phenomenon, the withdrawn detective finds that in order to actually catch the killer he will have to venture outside the safety of his own home for the first time in many years, and will need to enlist in the aid of agent ‘Peters’ (Radha Mitchell) to track his target down.

Somewhere a mix between “Matrix”, “I Robot” and “AI”, this adequate sci-fi crime-thriller has lots of really cool ideas, okay FX and a good performance from Willis, but unwisely settles into a formula shortly into the story (really? A Disney film settling into a formula?), making this just okay entertainment that found lukewarm reviews. This will have very good initial demand and probably won’t die off earlier than expected, but it’s not going to be some surprise video hit that’s going to allow you to buy that villa in the southern France…you’ll have to wait for the sequel to “Titanic” for that. Compare with 7/09’s “Push”, but bump this up for Willis’ starpower…there wasn’t much of that in “Push”.

Videoretailer.com Review:

Ellen Page stars as ‘Bliss’, who once was a beauty pageant contender, but shelved her crowns to focus on competing in a roller derby league in nearby Austin, on the team ‘Hurl Scouts’ much to the chagrin of her smothering, but ultimately caring mother (Marcia Gay Harden). As Bliss endures bumps, bruises and bloody noses, she quickly bonds to the other girls on her team, especially rowdy mentors ‘Malice In Wonderland’ (Kristen Wiig) and ‘Smashly Simpson’ (Drew Barrymore), and during her season, learns much about her personal strengths and weaknesses when it comes to skating, boys and life.

Drew Barrymore’s directorial debut is a pretty good coming-of-age dramedy that yes, runs a typical sports formula where a character overcomes to achieve, but follows a non-mainstream sport that is rough and punk rocky, giving this good-hearted film an edgy, indie feel that consumers and critics for the most part quite enjoyed. Pretty good starpower and boxart will help this find mainstream interest – particularly with teen and 20-something girls. Perhaps compare with 8/09’s “Adventureland”, though the PG13 rating here will open this up to targets more than “Adventureland”s R-rating. IMDB User Rating = 7.7 (out of 10).
